Scottish Woman

I am a Scottish woman, who spent eight years living in Jersey before moving to Leamington Spa and then Coventry in the Midlands. I moved back to Scotland two years ago along with my English partner and my son who was born in Warwickshire.

I knew that racism existed in Scotland, but I am absolutely appalled and often embarrassed by the level of abuse my partner has to cope with due to his being English.

What has made me particularly angry recently is the barrage of abuse being conducted after England were knocked out of Euro 2004.

I was shocked to turn on a national radio station the other day to find the presenter tell us 'England have been knocked out of Euro 2004', followed by a jingle of hallelujah and I must add that it was a recorded item previously aired and the presenter could not stop laughing.

I have arrived at work this morning to yet more racist material pinned to the door of our tearoom concerning the English team's exit. I am really sick and tired of this.

We are making ourselves look so petty, small-minded and stupid. I realise that other nationalities here in Scotland receive more physical and threatening abuse but I think as a nation it’s time to grow up and stop backbiting with our neighbours.
