Jewish Woman

On 26 May 2004, we found a graffiti on a wall in a central residential area of Edinburgh. The words were 'THE HATED JEWS'. Being Jewish and a granddaughter of an Auschwitz survivor, I found this deeply disturbing.

Although I have no doubt that this was not directed at anyone in particular in Edinburgh's small Jewish community, I still felt that these words of hate had to be erased as soon as possible, so as not to allow the bigot who wrote them the satisfaction of seeing them again.

I contacted the Police, who took my complaint very seriously, and had arranged for the graffiti to be erased within hours!

They also ensured that a formal complaint was made and, I must say, that I was impressed and very reassured at the way things were dealt with. I just hope that such things won't happen again, but somehow, I think they will.
