African Student

I am a student here in Scotland. I come from Africa (a Commonwealth member state). Looking back at my experience and living with a white community back at home I thought it would be as easy to integrate with the Scottish community. But I found it was very difficult.

After my first experience, I thought it was due to racial prejudice and that also created in me a sense of unease and life was bitter. After some months I realised that the problem was not with the community I am trying to integrate my life with, it was with me (xenophobic).

When I started visiting places outside campus I have realised how sweet the Scots (especially the elderly – I like them) can be, yes but not all, but at least there are a lot of reasons to enjoy life in Scotland.
