Independence of India – 60th Anniversary Celebrations
On 15 August 1947 India gained its independence from Britain.
At the same time the new country of Pakistan was created (see country profiles from
www.fco.gov.uk). The Scottish Government supported a number of events both here and in India to mark the anniversary and celebrate our shared history. The celebrations also supported the Government's One Scotland campaign, which celebrates the cultural diversity of Scotland and challenges racist attitudes and behaviour.
