Dumfries Museums and Camera Obsura

Dumfries Museum is hosting an exhibition researched by the historian, Frances Wilkins to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade from Great Britain.

Although there was no trading from Dumfries and Galloway directly, the people were involved in several aspects of the trade, from captains and crew of slave ships, merchants supplying goods to exchange for slaves to local people who own plantations in the Americas.

The exhibition will run from the 1st September 2007 until 6th October 2007. This event is free and available to the public and schools.

 Museum of Edinburgh

The Museum of Edinburgh in the Canongate is hosting an exhibition to mark the Bicentenary.

Edinburgh has many links with the slave trade, from the tobacco, rum and sugar, which came in from the Scottish owned plantations, to the Edinburgh residents who sailed to the West Indies in search of their fortunes. Slaves were even brought back and sold in Edinburgh! The exhibition will show that Edinburgh both profited from the slave trade, and was actively involved in its abolition.

There will be a programme of lectures and events associated with the exhibition. Please check our website or events leaflet for details.
