Education

All minority ethnic groups in Scotland are at least as or more likely to have degrees (or equivalent) than White Scottish people.

Those most likely to have degrees from ethnic minority groups are:

  • Africans (47%)
  • People from 'Other' ethnic groups (42%)
  • Indians (40%)

People from the White Scottish group and Pakistanis are the least likely to have degrees (17%).

Those most likely to have no qualifications are:

  • Pakistanis (43%)
  • Chinese (38%)
  • White Scottish people (35%)

In contrast, only 15% of African people aged 16-74 years have no qualifications.

The level of qualifications held by adults varies by age. Generally, older persons are more likely to have no qualifications than those in younger age groups. 14% of all people aged 16-34 years have no qualifications, compared to 61% of those aged 55-74 years.

Full details of the highest level of qualifications held by ethnic group and age are published in Analysis of Ethnicity in the 2001 Census (link opens in a new window).
