Historical Review of Scotland and the Slave Trade
To commemorate the bicentenary Scottish Ministers commissioned historians to review the role of Scotland and the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Scotland and the Slave Trade was published on 25 March and is a short booklet aimed at a general, but particularly young audience. It is designed to raise awareness and stimulate discussion around the issues of slavery, and the legacy it has left in contemporary Scotland.
LTS and ACTS Assemblies Resource
LTS and Action of Churches Together in Scotland (ACTS) produced an assembly resource to support schools programmes of religious observance.

LTS Teachers Resource
Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) and the Scottish Government developed a web resource for pupils and teachers. It is focussed at upper primary/lower secondary age groups.

The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) compiled an online guide to historical sources in the NAS and in other archives relating to slavery and Scotland, the slave trade and the abolition movement.
This guide, along with and several features on runaway slaves who attempted to claim their freedom in the Court of Session in Edinburgh, can be viewed at

'A Adam’s Bairns': Music CD, teachers’ resource pack, and schools workshop programme.
The National Library of Scotland (NLS) worked with Scotdec and Dr Fred Freeman to produce a music CD and accompanying teachers’ pack based on NLS collections. The CD and pack was distributed to all schools in Scotland, and there was a supporting programme of schools workshops and CPD events in each of the 32 local authority areas.

National Trust for Scotland
The NTS organised a series of workshops, involving diverse communities working together and leading to an Open Weekend celebrating Scottish and African culture – this included an interfaith service commemorating the abolition of the slave trade. There was also performances and displays throughout the year at NTS sites.
The NTS also researched a travelling display, examining links between NTS West Coast houses and the slave trade, and the Scottish and African contribution to the abolitionist campaign. Further research included an archaeological excavation at Culzean, in search of the ex-slave Scipio’s house as well as a series of readings about the slave trade and slavery.
ACTS are a member of the "Set All Free Coalition", which coordinates Churches Together in England, bringing together a diverse range of groups willing to work in a Christian ethos.
They produced a Bible study pack for use during Lent 2007 and six different A2 sized posters.
