Scottish Connections

What’s going on in Scotland?

Co-ordinating Activity

The Scottish Government convened a Scottish working group, bringing together key organisations across the country to co-ordinate and plan activities from a Scottish perspective and where appropriate, identify opportunities for joint working and awareness raising. The aim of the group was not for the government to tell people how to commemorate this important anniversary, but to help support organisations, groups and communities in their commemoration events.

The group included members from the Aberdeen City Council, Action of Churches Together in Scotland, the Big Lottery Fund, City of Edinburgh Council, Glasgow City Council, Heritage Lottery FundLearning and Teaching Scotland, National Archives of Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland, National Museums of Scotland, National Library of Scotland, National Trust for Scotland, and the Scottish Museums Council.

The group meet regularly and the minutes of each meeting are available in PDF format from the links below.

Historical Review- Scotland and the Slave Trade

The Scottish Government commissioned a historical review which reviewed Scotland’s role in the slave trade as well as the important part ordinary Scottish people, the church, academics and others played in its abolition. Scotland and Slave Trade, which was published on 25 March, and is aimed at a wide, but particularly young, audience. It has been disseminated to a broad range of bodies and organisations, including schools and libraries. It is designed to complement other resources available, including Learning and Teaching Scotland’s new on-line resource which can be accessed below.

Education

The Education Department of the Scottish Government commissioned Learning and Teaching Scotland to produce a website for use with upper primary and lower secondary pupils, providing information for teachers but also sections for pupils to use themselves. Scotland and the Abolition of the Slave Trade can be accessed from the following link: www.ltscotland.org.uk/abolition
