BBC (ICM): Race UK (May 2002)
A UK-wide survey on racism and related issues using an adjusted sample to ensure at least 500 interviews were conducted with people from White, Black and Asian backgrounds.
Results are disaggregated into responses from these groups.
Main Findings:
- Around half of those interviewed think that Britain is a racist society, but that it is more tolerant than it was 10 years ago.
- 60% of Black and Asian participants have experienced verbal racist abuse.
- 20% of Black and Asian participants have experienced physical racist abuse.
- Around 30% of Black and Asian participants have experienced racial discrimination in education and a similar figure at work.
- Around 50% of all participants thought immigrant communities could do more to integrate. 59% of white people do not think that immigrants integrate and make a positive contribution to Britain.
- 47% of white people thought that immigration has damaged Britain.
