Centre for Human Ecology: Who's a Real Scot? (April 2000)
Embracing Multicultural Scotland
A consultation project which aimed 'to facilitate greater participation of black and ethnic minority people in Scottish democratic processes, enriching debate on genuine multiculturalism and ensuring action on racism.'
It examined issues of identity, belonging, visions for a multicultural society and actions required by the parliament. A total of 27 groups comprising 108 people from EMG engaged in the exercise.
Some relevant findings:
- The experience of racism for many people can prevent a sense of belonging.
- It was felt that colour was the primary issue in relation to racism and discrimination.
- There was a lack of awareness in the general population about other cultures.
- Young people in particular, felt that their dual identity was not always recognised.
- The contribution made to Scotland by people from minority ethnic groups was not recognised.
